Eminem Releases: MMLP2

Shady’s back, back again…with his bleached blonde hair and all that. The 41 year old is back to the vintage Eminem. The highly anticipated “MMLP2” dropped on yesterday and Eminem definitely does not disappoint. The production of the album is unbelievable kudos to Dr. Dre and Rick Rubin. Features on MMLP2 include Skylar Grey, Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar and Nate Ruess. There are also five bonus tracks when you purchase the deluxe edition.

Eminem

The first song “Bad Guy” is a sequel to “Stan” on “The Marshall Mathers LP,” following “Rhyme or Reason,” which consists of a dope sample from “Time of the Season” by the Zombies. Shady raps as Yoda for a couple of lines showing his playful side to rapping. Bringing back his “Criminal” lyrics, the last song of “MMLP” towards the end of the song, shows Eminem’s brilliance in the hip-hop game and how far he’s come.

Eminem definitely proves that he is the best MC on the ninth track “Rap God.” His “supersonic speed” lyrics are hard to compete with. Is there anyone else who can flat out spit bars for six straight minutes? Perhaps a handful and Eminem is one of them.

“The Monster” is another popular track off of “MMLP2” where Eminem links up with Rihanna once again. This song explains about wanting to escape all of the fame and getting rid of the demons that has haunted Eminem throughout his life. The Detroit rapper explains in one line how he just wanted to be the “Bruce Lee of loose leaf” and Rihanna is the perfect singer for the chorus.

Once people found out that Kendrick Lamar was going to be on the album, everyone was anxious for “Love Game.” This song personifies the game of hip-hop as a woman who doesn’t love Eminem and Kendrick anymore. It explains how hip-hop has changed and their love cannot coexist. You add both Kendrick’s and Eminem’s craft in the same song, it becomes a lyrical phenomenon.

Being born in Missouri, Eminem brings back his country roots on the song “So Far…” Rick Rubin provides a country rock type hip-hop beat as Eminem spits. When you hear this, it reminds you of the part in his movie “8 Mile” when he’s rapping and mimicking Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” with his friend Future. In the middle of the song the beat suddenly changes and all of a sudden you hear “The Real Slim Shady” for a couple of seconds. He strongly emphasizes on his Detroit roots on how he can’t leave the city that made him and shaped him as a person.

The most intense, emotional, and surprising song would have to be the last song of the album entitled, “Headlights” with assistance from Nate Ruess, the lead singer of the band Fun. It is called “Headlights” because that was the last thing Eminem saw when his mom drove off. This song is a tribute to Eminem’s mom Debbie Mathers and it’s his sincere apology to his mother about the way he treated her. In one line, Eminem explains that his song “Cleaning Out My Closet” from “The Eminem Show,” will no longer be played at concerts and he “cringes every time it’s on the radio.”

Throughout his career, Eminem has shown why he is the G.O.A.T. He is regarded, as one of the most controversial rappers in hip-hop history but the fact that he is still doing what he loves at this age is truly remarkable. Who is next to stand up to Slim Shady?

Check out Eminem’s “Brainless” below where he brings back that vintage Slim.
